I liked the look of pattern Vogue V9090 because the gathers of the skirt started to 'flair' well below the waistline - I think this shape is more flattering that when the flair starts higher up (which can visually shorten the top half of the body).
I wanted to create a skirt suitable for a casual day look as well as being suitable for dressing up for evening. A lightweight denim would give the right amount of structure to hold the shape, and using a 'casual' fabric gives it a modern feel. I made view B, with a couple more inches added on the length, I didn't hem it, just sewed a row of stitches and kept a raw edge. I also top stitched around the waistband, it helps keep the fabric flat and crisp, and stitched the pleats to keep the silhouette streamlined.
As I was using a reasonably thick fabric I didn't use interfacing in the waist band. I also tailored the waistband to fit higher up than the picture on the pattern shows. I enjoyed making this pattern it is quick and easy to sew, I'd certainly recommend it.
I love the looks Raf Simons has created at Dior the past few seasons, his subtly edgy take on the classic Dior silhouette is simple, modern and feminine. My favourite looks at the Cannes Film Festival were most definitely Dior.
To balance the proportions a fitted top could be worn with this skirt, a simple bandeau top would work for a warm day, or evening with heels, or a polo neck and ankle boots in cooler weather.
It could be worn with trainers and a loose t-shirt, or a la Carolina Herrera, with a white shirt.
I feel like I just found my sewing/fashion soul sister. I was looking for examples of this pattern and your project was exactly what I was looking for to create a formal two piece set for a an upcoming cocktail party. This project is beautiful and I really appreciate the examples of how you paired it with different tops and the idea about making the waist band taller. Are you planning to post more projects? I really connect with your style and hope to see more. I'd also love to know who you like to follow since you're collection of projects is most in sync with what I love to sew as well.
ReplyDeleteHello Jody, thanks for your comment. I so glad you like it and found the post helpful. This skirt is one of my favourite pieces - I've even had a compliment from a stranger on the street! I highly recommend the pattern and would love to make another in a large print floral fabric for summer.
ReplyDeleteOther things have been taking up my time recently, but I will be making more clothes and putting up posts. I don't really follow any dressmaking blogs, Pinterest is where I collect my ideas. I do also like make-up and subscribe to Lisa Eldridge http://www.lisaeldridge.com and http://www.fashiongonerogue.com is great for ideas. I also look at https://www.net-a-porter.com again for ideas on garments and styling (outfit view). I hope you find these useful.
new to sewing i bought pattern, if i am correct their are 4 pieces to the skirt that has to be sewn together. Is their a video i can follow?
ReplyDeleteHello, thanks for getting in touch. Yes, there are four pieces that make up the actual skirt. The waistband is made up of one piece at the front and two at the back, these are doubled up with pieces on the inside. Therefore altogether out of the main fabric there are 4 skirt pieces and 6 waistband pieces.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a video I'm afraid - the instructions in the pattern packet are quite good. I alway read them carefully before I start cutting and sewing, but do often make adjustment before cutting and whilst going along. It's good to have a plan, but also good to remain flexible and adapt as you go to get the best results.
Interesting and amazing how your post is! It Is Useful and helpful for me That I like it very much, and I am looking forward to Hearing from your next.. Sana Safinaz
